From Professor Simon Olding, Director, Crafts Study Centre John Hinchcliffe's career as a designer-maker has been marked by courage, profound reflection and the determination to succeed - sometimes in the face of seemingly intractable odds. At every turn - whether as a weaver, studio-potter, designer for industry, printed textile maker, printer - and now, with his current exhibition, as a fine artist working within a craft idiom, he has left method behind, rather than fall into a predictable pattern of output. Clearly, a love of colour and of the rich complexity of surface decoration have been constant themes in his impressive and diverse creative output. His work is, at best, bold; drawn or painted with passion and flourish, but also with a fine and descriptive line.
From ‘Crafts’ magazine Chameleon’s progress John Hinchcliffe is something of a chameleon figure in the world of contemporary crafts. After studying textiles at Camberwell College of Art and Design and the Royal College of Art, he initially won renown – during the heady days of the 70s craft revival – as a maker of colour-saturated rag rugs. The following decade he changed tack and embraced ceramics, teaming up with artist Wendy Barber to create the richly patterned Hinchcliffe and Barber brand, which enjoyed great commercial success. As well as producing their own one-off and batch-produced ranges, the duo collaborated with industry by licensing their designs. |
