I found this exhibition very rewarding, because not only were his individual pieces exuberant, but the use of colour chimed with my recent readings on Josef Albers. And just as Moholy-Nagy was interested in design and production, JH together with his wife Wendy Barber for years have been producing spongeware pottery in collaboration with small ceramics factories. It was very interesting to read of JH's development from the mid 60s in the book by Simon Olding, director of the Study Centre. I love visiting the exhibitions in the Crafts Study Centre - rather selfishly - because there is usually no-one else there and I can spend a lot of time savouring not only what's on show, but also the beautiful architecture of the building itself. The separate exhibitions of their permanent collection repay frequent visits too. I'm lucky that it takes me about 20 minutes by car to reach this rewarding destination, next door to the James Hockey gallery too, which often has good exhibitions. threadingthoughts.blogspot.com
From the 24 Hour Museum A major new exhibition of work by designer-maker John Hinchcliffe is currently showing at England’s new museum of modern crafts, the Crafts Study Centre at the University College for the Creative Arts at Farnham. John Hinchcliffe: recent work runs until July 1 2006 and is the result of two year’s research and development. It brings all of Hinchcliffe’s signature interests in the rich exploration of colour and surface decoration to the forefront. |
